The Song of the Sea was reputedly sung by the Israelites after their crossing the Red Seain safety, and celebrates the destruction of the Egyptian army during the crossing, and looks forward to the future con… Miriam’s song, like that of her brother, began as a song of war, “of horsemen and horses” and of “chariots deep seas under.” Having sung triumphantly of the Israelite victory over the Egyptians, Moses moves on to the business of building a separate nation in the land of “milk and honey.” Of Moses’ song she only sings one verse, but it is clear for Israelites her phrasing, which, just as brevity of wit is terse, was more than musical––it was amazing. 768-769.

The Song of the Sea (Hebrew: שירת הים‎, Shirat HaYam, also known as Az Yashir Moshe and Song of Moses, or Mi Chamocha) is a poem that appears in the Book of Exodus of the Hebrew Bible, at Exodus 15:1–18. It is followed in verses 20 and 21 by a much shorter song sung by Miriam and the other women. This poem draws on a variety of midrashic interpretations of the story of Miriam. The midrash says that Miriam found a well that in the wilderness provided water for all the Israelites.
