This year’s asteroid – ‘2019 PDC’ The scene has been set for this year’s hypothetical impact scenario. Timeline of known close approaches less than one lunar distance from Earth.
The 2019 PDC Hypothetical Asteroid Impact Scenario. A hypothetical asteroid impact scenario will be presented at the 2019 IAA Planetary Defense Conference (PDC), to be held in College Park, Maryland, USA, April 29 - May 3, 2019.Although this scenario is realistic in many ways, it is completely fictional and does NOT describe an actual potential asteroid impact. — An asteroid was discovered on 26 March 2019 and has been given the name “2019 PDC” by the IAU’s Minor Planet Center. The Asteroid Redirect Mission, also known as the Asteroid Retrieval and Utilization mission and the Asteroid Initiative, was a space mission proposed by NASA in 2013. The process of impact prediction follows three major steps: Discovery of an asteroid and initial assessment of its orbit which is generally based on a short observation arc of less than 2 weeks. The Asteroid Retrieval Robotic Mission spacecraft would rendezvous with a large near-Earth asteroid and use robotic arms with anchoring grippers to retrieve a 4-meter boulder from the asteroid.

New calculations suggested there was a 10 percent chance that an asteroid named 2019 PDC would strike Earth in eight years, unleashing enough energy to level a whole city. The spacecraft would characterize the asteroid and demonstrate at least one planetary defense technique before transporting the boulder to
